SPRAOI PARADE
For 2008
Spraoi will present “The Ship” (working title!). A gigantic ship
will slip its moorings and slowly and steadily make it’s way down
the Quay, while specially choreographed performances take place in
and around it. The production team at Spraoi are promising that this
will be the most spectacular sight ever to be seen at the Spraoi
Festival, on a scale not previously seen in this country.
Always the highlight of the Spraoi Festival, the Spraoi Parade is
conceived, designed and constructed in-house under the direction of
Spraoi's Artistic Directors. It's a "one-off" fabulous spectacle,
specially produced for the streets and quays of Waterford City.
Traditionally an after dark production, it is Ireland's original
night time parade. Dramatic special effects, lighting, live music
with original soundtracks, puppetry, sumptuous costumes and
elaborate floats all come together to create a unique experience. It
takes over 400 performers, artists and technicians each year to make
it all happen, the vast majority of whom are volunteers.
It's a ten week production cycle from concept through construction
to performance, with the final three weeks being almost solely
dedicated to performance and choreography rehearsals. Throughout
those weeks professional and voluntary personal work hand in hand on
almost every stage of production.
Growing steadily each year, this visual feast now attracts an
audience in excess of 60,000 along the mile long route. This is
theatre on a vast scale, a vivid, vibrant and unforgettable
experience for performer and spectator alike.
