On Friday Christ Church Cathedral is the venue for a unique screening of the black and white silent film “The Hunchback of Notre Dame”.
This adaptation of Victor Hugo’s novel Notre-Dame de Paris, directed by Wallace Worsley and starring Lon Chaney as Quasimodo, was released in 1923 and turned Chaney into a screen legend. The story centres on the love of the deformed bell ringer, Quasimodo, for the gypsy Esmeralda and creates a sweeping panorama of life in Medieval Paris.
This silent film will be accompanied by live improvisations by organist Morgan Cooke. This is a wonderful opportunity to see a rare silent film in a unique and atmospheric setting.
