CHILDRENS EVENTS
sprÓg
Produced by Garter Lane Arts Centre, sprÓg began life in 2000 as a
fringe event to the Spraoi Festival, focusing on lively, engaging
entertainment for 5-8 year olds. For 2008 sprÓg will run for five
days, from Monday, July 28th, and incorporates performance,
workshops and exhibitions in dance, puppetry, music, storytelling
and arts by national and international companies. Further
information on www.garterlane.ie
Spraoi Drums
Now a regularly established favourite at the festival, Spraoi Drums
involves 35 young people aged between 10 and 18 who workshop in
percussion throughout the summer, culminating in various
performances at the Spraoi Festival. Led by percussionist John
Barron, they produce a totally infectious mix of African, Brazilian
and Caribbean beats.
Other Events
The Spraoi festival incorporates many performances for children into
it’s overall programme. Wyse Park, in Waterford’s city centre, will
focus particularly on family entertainment. Highlights for 2008 will
include “The Polar Bear” by Los Kaos, performances by Dowtcha
Puppets from Cork, break dancing by Street Scape from Waterford, and
magic from Magic4U from Australia.
